BoJ's Shirakawa: watching oil price impact from easing

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said on Saturday policymakers are closely watching the impact of looser monetary policy on oil prices.

The Bank of Japan, along with the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve, is taking unconventional steps to boost the economy. The BoJ boosted asset purchases by 10 trillion yen on February 14 and pledged to keep ultra-easy policy until a 1 percent inflation goal is in sight.

Speaking at a meeting of the Group of 20, Shirakawa said policymakers were closely watching the effects and side-effects of monetary easing on crude prices, which rose above $125 a barrel to end near a 10-month high on Friday.

But he said he did not see monetary easing as a big factor and the recent spike was more due to geopolitical tensions. Brent's recent gains have been fueled mainly by worries over Iranian supply.

92% Arthur Christmas

Arthur Christmas is a beautiful and fun Christmas movie that is sure to be a holiday classic. The story follows Arthur who is the son of Santa Clause, his brother Steve is a smart but at times inconsiderate role model who is second in command to Santa, and when a little girl has a gift that did not get sent Arthur does everything he can to make sure this girl has a Merry Christmas. The plot of the movie is funny and a great lesson to be told about Christmas and children, and what i learned from this movie if anything is that every child needs to believe in Santa, because there is nothing better than believeing that there is somebody who loves you that whill bring you a present on Christmas day, and the characters of the film were good but i found the characters to be a little selfish at times besides Arthur who was a incredibly kind and good charcater and he saved the film in a way from being just a bunch of selfish men wanting to be a star. The voice cast was great, James McAvoy was perfect for the character, Hugh Laurie was also was a well done choice as Steve, Jim Broadbent was good as the voice as Santa, and Bill Nighy was also a great choice for his role, what else can I say for voice actors other than I liked them. The animation was incredible, I could really tell they worked hard to make a beautiful Christmas film and it really payed off big time, I loved the beauty in this film. Arthur Christmas had some few problems that kept it from being a perfect Christmas film, but those were minor compared to the things that they got right that made it a great Christmas film and that will make it remembered for years to come.

Health Insurance Options for the Self-Employed | I've Tried That

How to work at home and maintain affordable health care. It?s not easy, but here are a few options.

One of the biggest challenges of self-employment is obtaining affordable private health insurance. When you are employed at a company, that company?s group bargaining privileges allow for all insured employees to receive a lower premium. Once you strike out on your own, however, you lose that group bargaining advantage. Paying for private health insurance can take a big bite out of your income, especially if you are older or have preexisting health conditions.

Most self-employed individuals take one of five routes when attempting to find and pay for private health insurance. They either:

1. Risk having no health insurance.
2. Pay for COBRA-sponsored health insurance.
3. Pay for exorbitantly expensive private health insurance.
4. Obtain occupation-specific group health insurance.
5. Obtain an HSA (i.e., health savings account).

Self-Employed Health Insurance Options

No health insurance

Many folks, especially if they are young and single, risk going without health insurance coverage. However, in the event that they become sick or injured, the costs inherent in treatment a condition like cancer or a broken arm can be astronomical. Personally, I?ve witnessed at least two of my friends, both in their mid-30?s, be diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses while not covered under any health insurance plan. In the first case, the friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and ended up going into lifelong debt to pay for her chemotherapy. In the second case, the friend ended up with an $80,000 surgery bill, which was miraculously paid by the hospital?s charity fund.

The other issue with having no health insurance coverage is that you don?t benefit from routine check-ups that could end up saving your life. For example, many cancers can be cured if they are caught early. However, if you don?t get routine check-ups, you could end up paying with your life.

Pay for COBRA

If you recently became self-employed, you can remain on your old employer?s health insurance plan for up to 18 months via COBRA coverage. However, you must now pay up to 102% of the plan?s costs, which includes the amount that you and your employer paid for your health insurance, plus an additional 2% for administrative fees. This can be quite substantial since employers often pay the majority of their employees? health insurance costs.

In my own case, I went from paying just $78/month for my individual health insurance plan to $456/month. Keep in mind that I had no preexisting conditions and had not visited my PCP in nearly five years. When I added my partner to the plan, my insurance premium skyrocketed to over $870/month! Obviously, the high price tag of COBRA coverage makes it unfeasible for many self-employed individuals and their families.

Things become even worse if you are disabled and are obtaining COBRA coverage under an 11 month disability extension (following the standard 18 month COBRA coverage term). In such a case, you could pay up to 150% of your former employer?s premium. This is simply insane.

Obtain private health insurance

Many of my self-employed friends and family members purchase their own private health insurance plans through big name insurance companies like Dean, Kaiser Permanente, AllState, etc. However, they all had to apply to several health insurance providers before being accepted into even a single program.

Those members that had preexisting health conditions like heart disease or diabetes were forced to pay extremely steep insurance premiums; for example, my uncle is in his early 60?s, has a history of high blood pressure, and pays about $1,000/month for his private health insurance plan. Likewise, your provider might raise your rates substantially if you make too many claims in a single year.

Obtain occupation-specific group health insurance

Although not as common as employer-sponsored group health insurance, some trades and guilds do offer occupation-specific group health insurance. In such cases, the premiums cost significantly less than those of private health insurance plans. For example, the members of the Freelancers Union collectively bargain with health insurance companies for a set member premium. Once you join the Freelancers Union, you reap the benefits of such membership.

Getting occupation-specific group health insurance is great; the problem is that it is not available to every profession or geographic location. Most of the available health insurance providers are centered in big cities like Chicago or New York. Unless you plan to drive many miles for your next health check-up or dental exam, occupation-specific group health insurance is not going to be possible for you.

Start a health savings account

The HSA, or health savings account, has become very popular in recent years as people try to find affordable health insurance for themselves and their families. An HSA is set up very much like a Flexible Spending Account, or FSA: You contribute pre-tax dollars into a separate bank account and then use that money for qualified health and medical expenses. Unlike the FSA, however, your contributed money does not expire at the end of the year. Thus, you are not subject to a ?use-it-or-lose-it? policy with HSA monies.

On the contrary, you can even regard your HSA as another type of IRA, since it is likely that you will need to withdraw from your HSA as you become older. Unlike an IRA, however, you are not taxed upon withdrawing money from your HSA- as long as that money is used for qualified health and medical expenses. If you have the good fortune of not needing your HSA cash for health and medical expenses, you can still withdraw and use your money- provided you pay your taxes on it, of course.

HSA contributions can be quite substantial and really help you during tax time: For 2012, an individual can contribute as much as $3,100 into an HSA, while a family can contribute up to $6,250. If you are 55 years or older, you can add an additional $1,000 of ?catch-up? money to your individual or family contribution. All this money is deductible from your gross income, allowing you to soften much of the taxman?s blow.

Before you start an HSA, you will first need to obtain a high deductible insurance plan. Many companies offer such plans, each with its own annual premium and deductible. Keep in mind that some deductibles can be as high as $2,000/year. Surprisingly, not all health insurance premiums will inversely correlate with deductible amounts, so it pays to compare individual insurance companies and find out exactly what they will (or will not) cover.

An HSA is not for everyone. If you require several drug prescriptions or are in poor health, the high deductible that you must pay before dipping into your HSA funds (which are still your own money) may make this coverage too expensive for you. Likewise, if you are considering becoming pregnant or have a preexisting medical condition, there could be a waiting period before maternity or other coverage begins. However, for many self-employed individuals and their families, having a tax-deductible HSA is a realistic solution to otherwise paying for highly priced private health insurance.

FAIRHOPE, Alabama (AP) ? Mardi Gras. It brings to mind beads, parties and fancy floats in New Orleans as people cram in all the fun they can before the austere religious period known as Lent begins.

In reality, Mardi Gras has long been celebrated in U.S. coastal towns from Texas to Florida. And it means big business.

"It is more of a regional thing, Mardi Gras is," said Stephen Toomey, whose family started a chain of Alabama-based Mardi Gras party supply stores.

"It means a way of life for people who live in these communities, but the bottom line is that it creates a lot of jobs."

Tourism leaders estimate more than 1 million visitors pour into the Mobile, Alabama, area each Mardi Gras season to watch the festivities. The city claims to be the place where the Fat Tuesday celebration originated in the U.S. in the early 1700s.

New Orleans and Mobile have long disputed where the tradition that dates to their French founders really began.

The celebration can stretch weeks and includes dozens of parades, balls and other events.

A 2004 study commissioned by the city of Mobile estimated Mardi Gras had a $225 million economic impact for the area, and tourism leaders say that has grown as the festivities become more popular.

"I would say tens of thousands of dollars are spent on the different beads and throws and things that are thrown off the floats. It really benefits every kind of retailer and the tourism industry," said David Randel, president of the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"From a convention and visitors bureau standpoint, you hope people come for Mardi Gras, fall in love with the area and come back to visit again when the weather is better."

In smaller towns like Fairhope, population 17,000, Mardi Gras is a big help.

Heavenly Creations Bakery sold 1,500 traditional Mardi Gras king cakes in 2011. The colorful cakes go for up to $19.99 each.

Rosie Miller has sold Mardi Gras ball gowns to the women of the Gulf Coast for 30 years. She has thousands of them, most for under $300.

The store has vanloads of women from small towns all over the region who come to shop. Some buy five or six gowns for the various balls they attend during the season.

"Mardi Gras has grown and grown and brings millions of dollars into our economy," Miller said.

Small towns all over the Gulf Coast have parades, balls and other festivities during Carnival Season. In Florida, Pensacola Beach's 2012 Mardi Gras' Schedule includes 16 events from Jan. 7 to Feb. 21.

"Oh yeah, Mardi is a ball, absolutely, it's fun," said Jill Jones, who dressed her dog up in a headband, jester collar and cape and wore a matching costume during the beach's pet parade this month.

Marriage Equality Opponents File Paperwork for Voter Referendum ...

Opponents of same-sex marriage in Washington filed paperwork seeking a referendum on the newly signed marriage equality law, less than three hours after Governor Chris Gregoire signed it into law yesterday, the SeattlePI reports:

They have until June 6, a political D-Day for collecting and submitting 120,577 valid voter signatures to put marriage equality on the November ballot.? The right of same-sex couples to wed would be blocked until voters decide the issue.

?"Marriage is reserved for a man, a woman and the children that they raise," said Joseph Backholm of the Family Policy Institute of Washington. The state of Washington should not be "validating" gay and lesbian relationships, Backholm told reporters at the Secretary of State's office.

Sponsors of Referendum 73 include groups at the right end of the political spectrum such as Concerned Women for America and the National Organization for Marriage.? The campaign is being mounted under the banner of a group called Preserve Marriage Washington.? Backholm predicted that the campaign will be "expensive", with estimates in the $2-4 million range for each side.

Jeremy Hooper notes that Preserve Marriage Washington, formerly known as The Stand For Marriage Washington Coalition, has already positioned itself as extreme, and has a new website with new stock photos!

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Don Cornelius was cremated at a private service attended by family and family who were led in prayer by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the "Soul Train" founder's family announced Friday.

Jackson led the gathering in prayer during the service, which was held at the same cemetery where Michael Jackson and other celebrities are interred.

"The Rev. Jackson and my father were very, very close friends and I wouldn't have it any other way," Cornelius' son Tony wrote in a statement.

Cornelius' family is also planning a larger private memorial for next week, during which he will be eulogized by Jesse Jackson.

The popular host killed himself Feb. 1 with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had in recent years faced health problems and divorced his wife after a fight with her led him to plead no contest to spousal battery.

Since his death, Cornelius has been honored around the country by fans and celebrities alike. "Soul Train" showcased legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. It brought the best R&B, soul and hip-hop acts to TV and had teenagers dance to their music.

Cornelius was honored Saturday with public celebrations in Harlem and Chicago, where he founded "Soul Train" in 1970. The show became one of the longest-running syndicated shows in history, introducing audiences to many top music acts and providing a never-before-seen TV platform for black culture.
