US Navy's High-Resolution Radar Can See Individual Raindrops In a Storm

>Doppler radar can actually spot individual raindrops in a cloudburst,

A raindrop, you say? Like what, a big one? Ok, that's 5mm across for the largest type. From here: http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/IgorVolynets.shtml [hypertextbook.com]

It's only a matter of time that other countries develop "weather radar" as pinpoint as this.

The F22 and F35 radar cross sections have been compared to a metal marble and a metal golf ball, respectively. Their "stealth technology" has just been rendered obsolete.

RPG Aeon Avenger (for Android)

RPG Aeon Avenger ($3.99) is a pretty good Japanese-style adventure game for Android phones and tablets. While the combat mechanics can get a bit dull, and character advancement is entirely through weapon configuration, the zippy, propulsive plot makes up for a lot.

Aeon Avenger is the tale of a young man who saw his family killed by a black-clad baddie, and the time-traveling priestess he's bringing along for the ride. Other characters join or leave the party at various times as the plot demands, and the story takes place in several dozen locations over three different time periods.

Controls here are a simple virtual D-pad and an action button. A menu bar pops up at the top of the screen during battles. You can tap menu item or enemies directly, or use the D-pad to select them; the D-pad works better on smaller phone screens because some of the interface elements are pretty small.

There's one location scale for the little anime sprites, along with a battle view that shows larger monster images. Rather than walking a world map, you teleport among locations that open up on a static map, like on many console-style games.

Character advancement is a little disappointing. While characters do level up from experience, most skills are acquired through adding magic "bits" to weapons. The bits can be swapped in and out, and different weapons are more useful against different enemies, making equipment management absolutely critical. This feels a lot less personal than a traditional class or skill-based advancement systems. The result is that you get much less attached to the characters.

That said, all the classic gaming elements are here: a plot you want to get to the bottom of, plenty of NPCs to talk to, treasure chests with the next cool magic item, and just enough challenge to keep you occupied. RPG Aeon Avenger isn't a masterpiece like our Editors' Choice Symphony of Eternity ($2.99, 4 stars), but it's definitely worth the four dollars.

Science Outreach: Start Getting Artsy

The cover to Scientific American December 1916 is rocking with alluring imagery.

There?s a reason the front cover of Scientific American isn?t a wall of text.

There?s a reason it isn?t a text-heavy infographic. Images are alluring. They catch attention. They intrigue people enough to ask, ?what?s that all about??

There have been a number of discussions again lately about science communication, specifically outreach. ?Scicurious wrote a nice round-up on Neurotic Physiology, Jason Goldman at The Thoughtful Animal effectively reached some people about the recent transit of Venus across the sun and here on Symbiartic, my co-blogger wrote Communicating Science: What?s Your Problem? and A Conference of Science Communicators. If you are interested in getting the public more interested in science, attracting attention to the science blogosphere, or to picking up easy to find print publications, you need to have interesting and smart imagery.

There are two types of image which can help science posts online.

Images for clarity

At it?s simplest, this can manifest itself as ?Ok, I wrote a post about blood pressure in giraffes; I?ll include some Creative Commons or public domain photos of giraffes.? ?Not necessarily inspiring, but it gets the job done. You?ve got a visual, a bit of a hook. You might go further, and find or commission a scientific illustration showing ?the size and position of the giraffe heart and circulatory system. Scientific and medical illustration have an advantage over photos this way, since the artist edits out the extraneous viscera and bloody mess, showing the clear system cut away in a galloping or grazing giraffe.

Images for inspiration and impact

This is where science outreach needs to get artsy.

An effective artistic piece about the subject can do a whole lot more to draw people in. On a site about the safety of vaccines, instead of cold, clinical needles, why not happy, smiling children? (Making a human connection is a bonus.)

If you don?t know where to look for a science communicator with an artistic portfolio, you can start with the Science Artists Feed, a blog rss feed with over 150 wildly varying working talents. Or the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.

Two of the scientific fields that maintain public interest in the news are astronomy and prehistoric life, usually dinosaurs. I don?t think the amount of science fiction ? in books, movies, cartoons and illustrations- that?s been built up around those disciplines?is unrelated to their popularity. ?We don?t know much about the colour and only some things about the?behaviors?of dinosaurs: but the licence by paleo-artists let?s us imagine them based on current animal analogues. We don?t know what it?s like to view sunset on an extrasolar planet; but we can see it in the illustrations generated to get us excited about it.

So it?s a challenge for illustrators and communicators alike: how do you inject emotion and artistic licence into important research with little artistic vocabulary?

The same way it?s possible to collect and enjoy a history of dinosaur art, imagine in a hundred years? time what the art history of wind power, or the Higgs-Boson or immunoproteomics will look like.

pr pitch tips from a reporter - Business Insider

LinkedIn

Why didn't you just SAY Reid Hoffman was an investor?

Atomic PR has sent me at least three emails about a new startup, Rally.org.

I didn't open any of them until I saw the news -- which was actually interesting -- up on other sites.

The startup they were representing, Rally.org. raised a big $7.9 million Series A from some amazing investors: Mike Maples, Reid Hoffman, Kevin Rose, and Scott Belsky, to name a few.

Anything those people are interested in is something I'm interested in covering. And Rally is actually a decent-sounding startup.? It's a social fundraising platform that helps anyone with a cause raise money and share their stories.

Here's what Atomic did wrong.

Due to an absurd amount of startup pitches that infiltrate my inbox, I've learned to manage emails by scanning for three things:

  • The sender
  • The subject title
  • The first sentence

I use Gmail, so those are the three things I can see without clicking to open the message.

The three emails I received from Atomic were titled:

  • The Trouble with Pebble: Kickstarter competitor Rally.org Sheds Some Light
  • Embargoed News: Rally.org secures unique round of funding from superstar investors
  • Social fundraising platform Rally.org raises $7.9 million in Series A funding online

Here's why I didn't open them:

  • I had never met or heard of the people sending me the news, and it was clear they didn't know me either
  • I had never heard of Rally.org, so using the startup's name in the subject title wasn't alluring
  • "Embargoed news" isn't particularly compelling either. No reporter wants news every other publication will be receiving. They want exclusives!
  • The most interesting part of the news, the investors (which help give unknown startups credibility) were never mentioned up front
  • The most compelling (final) email arrived in my inbox after the news was already out (it was a short email followed by a press release). It still didn't list any of the impressive investors up front.

So, I missed the boat, and so did Atomic/Rally.

Buyers
Your Home Inspection will provide you with valuable information about the home you are going to purchase. Some of the issues found in a home inspection may be repaired by the seller, or the purchase price could be adjusted to allow for repairs. This means less money out of your pocket and more peace of mind for you.

Sellers
Do you think you know your home? Don?t let a buyer?s inspection catch you by surprise! Get your home inspected before listing it. Make the necessary improvements and we can re-inspect it. The new inspection report will show a clean bill of health. Your Realtor can use this report to market your home as MOVE IN CERTIFIED and make it stand out from all the bank owned properties. Get your asking price with no haggling.

Investors
Use the initial home inspection to assess your purchase and help you with your cost analysis. When you are ready to resell, the report may be updated to show the current status of the home and can be used as a selling tool. If you are going to rent, the inspection report is documentation of the homes current condition when the lease is signed. This will protect you when tenants leave.

New Homeowners
Your homebuilder gives you a warranty on your new home. Don?t let that opportunity slip by. Many defects are not obvious to the untrained eye. Let a professional prepare your punch list for the builder. The inspection report will also advise you on maintenance items. This will help you preserve the value of your home.

Construction Phase Inspections
If you are having a home built, there are key times during the process when you want to get an inspection before possible defects are covered up. This inspection can be tailored to your individual needs.

Remodel/ Repair Inspections

Having a new roof put on your home, or any other large improvement? We?ll make sure your contractor does it right! Have us stop by and check to see that the work is being done properly, before it?s too late. We can also approve the completed job before you make the final payment to the contractor.

Internet Marketing Experts: Wild deer and horses in The Sims 3: Pets

Wild deer and horses in The Sims 3: Pets
I know the type of neighborhood structures are too worried about the deer and wild horses in their neighborhoods, so perhaps this information will assist. Nardone has been saying on Twitter that "the center" is not produced worlds deer and wild horses, all - Bridgeport giving as an instance. So perhaps, just possibly, EA CAW gives a small update for us to establish the status of a world we make. Or possibly somebody from the community is one way to do this and implement a simple tool we can use the categories of our worlds. Definitely, a ray of hope greater than previously on the subject, anyway - and give us an idea where to start trying to figure this out before the game ships.

Buy-clearance exists in animal breeding, such as insects, stones, etc. At least for the turtles, snakes, birds and other small animals. I cannot say for sure the similar applies to larger animals. So if that's the case, you do not necessitate a category, simply by not placing the players.

The expansion team has been asked by the wild horses and players said no, you do not place the players for them, they produce only anyway. It looks to be at the neighborhood level, so that much the similar way that the bells from the center to generate more cars, but also does not generate the wild horses. However, a sigh, it's good to know all the bells in my present will be useless because they lack the appropriate players for small animals. I hope the patch the game, at least update the newly created Sunset Valley, Riverview, and so on to include the players.

Re: Wild deer and horses in The Sims 3: Pets
That does not give anyone any glimmer of hope. On the contrary, is telling you that unless you play in a world that actually CITY will be overcome by the wild horses on the street and if he does play a World Cup to the city, you cannot have them all. I live in the biggest city in my country and we have rustic areas and full of wildlife for example Scotland, suburban and rustic areas have deer, foxes, etc. I live in an area of accumulation, not downtown, but not rural, either foxes or I have to visit my garden on a daily basis. For me, this answer makes it even inferior and an affront to the players who simply are not placing any thought into this at all. I bet it's very improbable that you add the prospect of a city in the world of CAW, and not at all did add the WA. They need to put up for sale these worlds of the city that are not great for anybody with pets and wild animals that do not have them at all, even in the suburbs.

It's one of those 'be careful what you wish for the genie situations and has heard and has twisted desire for us to make the PE even less attractive than it was. This does not solve the problem of wild horses running through the main street, except in Bridgeport, which is basically to be excluded altogether. It's time EA had a talk with simmering you can actually these things beforehand, taking feedback from other players into consideration as well.

Have you thought that just might be able to generate in the open lawn and keep off the grass open (not running on the roads) - if you have a lot they do not generate - so densely populated in the world or city not only generate.

Many times, people asked about this issue, including the one I attended, but any of the producers in particular do not know or do not want to answer it. But I agree that this could become a major problem with the animals invade the cities, if we look at celebrities infestation EA is obviously cannot correct.

Re: Wild deer and horses in The Sims 3: Pets
That's what I'm asking for, something that would keep only those areas, but do not listen. Worlds have been banned from the city by encoding them. The problem with this is that even has Bridgeport suburban areas where we see wild animals and horses owned Sim. But people are not asking the correct questions and it's clear that EA teams are not capable to think of themselves. First they said it could have a gnome to keep them off the lots. After that they arise with this impractical thought to keep them out of the city that does not unravel the world?s troubles by any means, we cannot make the worlds of the city and how does that assist manufacturers worldwide.

I have asked specifically about the layer of the world and offers suggestions on around him, as a spawning radial sure it's not too much work, or could have used the same code that is being used for the gnome (well approximately) and made a world of objects designers could place on the streets who do not want the horses to visit.

The EA celeb explosion cannot be fixed and the explosion of vampires that cannot be fixed? There are NO set explosions is different. Twallan fixed two issues and I'm crossing my fingers that can help with this. He or someone who can make ab objects and add code to it, as one of the issuers of fog. Honestly, I think EA should pay for fixing Twallan all errors, if not for him, most of us are gone. Everything is fixable, you can do, just do not want to. Sometimes I think they are deliberately trying to ruin the game. I do not thinking processes at all.

They are surly fragmented, but that is their own work. There are sufficient fine sites for feedback property, and so on, so why not even anticipate people to go to Twitter or Facebook is beyond me. I do not have the proper equipment meeting proper discussion. A guy who makes windows and curtains else does, but do not work together so that the stick of all edges of the windows through the curtains. I bet you just use the check-in PC software in the design of good rather than old-fashioned meetings once a week to formulate a plan.

Today we're turning our attention to solving math problems faster than you ever thought was possible. In this article you?ll learn two tips to help you add quickly?all in your head! Next we'll build on these tips to learn another way to do some fast addition in your head.

Swimming Pool And Lawn Home Improvement Tips

Some home improvement projects are more common than others. You are only limited by your imagination as there is information on the most complex projects. Any contractor will be happy to take your money. Doing it yourself or with your friends? help is part of the fun.

Some painting jobs might be too hard and you may need to hire a professional to get the job done. Painting requires a little bit of forethought if you want to get the job done right. Factors like how warm it is, how cold it is, and the type of aeration within your home must be considered.

Deciding on the type of paint that will work best inside your home will be based upon those factors. For those of you with small children, you will want to consider using non-toxic paint to keep the little ones safe. Children and pets can also play a role in helping you choose the proper paint for your home. The benefit of having non-toxic paint or environmentally safe paint is that you can rest easily that your children will not be harmed.

Another fun home improvement project you should consider is installing an aquarium that is recessed in the wall. These aquariums can be very beautiful when done correctly. And the thing is, there?s really nothing difficult about it. But because you?ll need space behind the wall, the spot you choose is important. For ease of access, some people leave a small space where they can walk behind the tank. You will need to consider the lighting with this project as well. If you are running a saltwater reef tank, then again there will be extra thought needed for the special lighting for reefs.

A very hard, but worthwhile, project that you can start is installing an in ground swimming pool in your backyard. Although you might want to do this yourself, you will probably save yourself time and money by hiring someone else to do it. It is always good to talk with neighbors or friends that have had this done and ask them what their experience was with their company. An in-ground swimming pool is a large investment, but it will add to the value of your home. Be sure you have researched the company that you choose thoroughly before hiring them to do this job.

When you do home improvement projects, you are accomplishing several things. First, you add value to your home by increasing its assets. And your entire family can enjoy the final results of your improvements for years to come.

China eyes dim sum, looks to set benchmarks for others

China?s Ministry of Finance is planning to sell a Rmb1bn 15 year tranche as part of its Rmb23bn ($3.6bn) offshore renminbi bond offering at the end of the month, the first time it has issued in the maturity. That could lead to an increase in longer-dated issuance, said bankers and investors.

The Stupid Rise Of The Subscription Condom Startup

condomsI love me some subscription commerce. Whether it be getting new underwear sent to me in the mail, or having someone pick out shirts for me, I love the idea of paying a flat fee and having shit just show up at my doorstep once a month. It's even better if whatever's being sent is kind of a surprise. That said, there's a recent trend in subscription commerce that's disturbingly popped up and recently been flagged in the TechCrunch tips line: The rise of the subscription condom service. Over the past few weeks, it's been suggested that we (separately) look into DollarRubberClub.com, as well as Rubber of the Month Club. A cursory Google search reveals that there are others, like Lucky Bloke -- "the ultimate condom subscription service," it claims -- and Sir Richard's Subscription Condom Service.

Serena Williams has 'no intention of stopping'

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Just in case there were any doubts out there, Serena Williams wants to make perfectly clear that she's going to be around tennis awhile longer. So is older sister Venus.

"I have no intention of stopping, and I don't think she does either. We're definitely connected at the hip," the 30-year-old Williams said Saturday, two days before Wimbledon begins. "I enjoy being out there on the court so much."

Asked what she likes most about tennis, Williams explained: "I love competing. I love the challenge. I love holding up trophies. So I guess if ever I feel that I can't do that, then maybe I won't play anymore."

On a bit of a roll, she continued: "That's what I love. I love stepping out on that court, having that atmosphere, that moment. That moment is all about me. Maybe it's a little selfish, but I love that feeling."

The last time she was on a court at a tournament, though, things did not go as planned, and there was no trophy anywhere in sight.

On May 29, Williams lost to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the French Open, the American's only first-round exit in 47 Grand Slam appearances. Williams led 5-1 in the second-set tiebreaker ? all told, she was two points away from winning nine times ? but she wasn't able to close the deal.

After a few weeks to ponder that disappointment, and to get ready for the switch from clay courts to grass, Williams is ready to seek a fifth Wimbledon championship and 14th major title overall.

"Whether I had won in Paris or lost like I did in the first round, I am always extremely motivated," she said. "If anything, you know, I think losing makes me even more motivated."

A decade ago, Williams won the French Open and Wimbledon one after the other, mastering the difficult surface transition and short turnaround.

No woman has taken those two trophies home in the same year since.

The latest to try will be No. 1-ranked Maria Sharapova, who won her first title at Roland Garros two weeks ago, completing a career Grand Slam.

"It's the toughest back-to-back, Grand Slam-wise, no doubt. Especially if you're coming off a French Open win ... as much as you want to celebrate and enjoy, you come here and it's like a whole new ballgame," Sharapova said.

Going from clay to grass is "certainly an adjustment," she said. "The first two days, you're like, 'Wait, I can't really slide that much.' So you have to take a few more steps. I'm like, 'That's kind of unfortunate. I kind of got used to it.' ... I mean, on a fast grass court, you're not playing more than five-ball rallies. If you are, probably doing something wrong."

Sharapova's triumph in Paris was the fourth major title of her career, but the first since having surgery on her right shoulder in October 2008.

Her first major championship came at Wimbledon in 2004 at age 17, when she upset Williams in the final.

Sharapova reached the semifinals at the All England Club in 2005 and 2006, but then went through a four-year stretch when she lost twice in the second round and twice in the fourth. Last year, the Russian made it back to the final ? her first at a Grand Slam tournament since the 2008 Australian Open ? before losing to Petra Kvitova.

"It was definitely a big step for me in the right direction," Sharapova said. "It had been a while."

It's been a while right now for Williams, who isn't used to long stretches between Grand Slam titles. Her last came two years ago at Wimbledon; less than a week later, she cut her feet on glass at a restaurant, precipitating a string of health problems that sidelined her for three majors in a row.

The only time in her Grand Slam career that she went more than two years without winning one of the sport's top four events came during a gap from the 1999 U.S. Open until the 2002 French Open ? and her title in Paris back then began a run of four consecutive major championships.

For someone who loves holding up trophies, that must have been fun.

Bob Ford: Sandusky trial the easy part of meting out justice in scandal

But the forces that conspired to allow Sandusky free rein on the campus of Pennsylvania State University for way too long are just as guilty as Sandusky. If prosecuted and convicted, they will be found guilty of different crimes, but had they acted differently fewer children would have been molested.

That's about as clearly as it can be put. If people had done the right thing, fewer children would have been hurt. Getting that side of the equation brought to justice will be the difficult part, however, because the walls of power are high, and those who inhabit them have resources that enable them to remain inside.

As the commonwealth pursues criminal charges against Penn State administrators Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, and very possibly against former school president Graham B. Spanier, it will become increasingly difficult to obtain convictions from a local jury.

While Sandusky can be easily put away as a rogue freak who passed among us, Schultz, Curley, and Spanier were the very cloth of the community, and if that can be rended, what does it say about the community? If the all-encompassing influence over the region - Penn State - can be demonstrated to be morally bankrupt at its core, then what about the rest of us?

A jury can slam the door on Sandusky, who was willing to answer fully to Bob Costas but not to the people of the commonwealth, but what will happen when Schultz, Curley, and Spanier ask their peers to understand how difficult it is to steer this large ship that carries so much that is good?

Yes, that will be the difficult part, and twice difficult because it will once again take the conversation in the vicinity of Joe Paterno, a place where emotion has trumped common sense in the past.

Kenny Chesney pushes at boundaries of country

By Tony Sclafani, TODAY.com contributor

Kenny Chesney performing at the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas on April 1.

Whimsical humor, literary ambitions, confessional albums. None of those are anything we associate with most country artists. But all those qualities can be found in the music of Kenny Chesney, whose fifteenth studio album, ?Welcome to the Fishbowl,? dropped on Tuesday.

Chesney, who performs as part of the TODAY concert series Friday, June 22, can be pretty silly, with song titles like ?She Thinks My Tractor?s Sexy,? and showed a leaning toward literature with his 2010 album, ?Hemingway?s Whiskey.? For his newest album, which is the follow up to ?Hemingway,? Chesney waxes introspective and gets self-analytical. And he?s getting critical praise for it.

?Sad songs set in El Cerrito and New York; a title track peevishly protesting lost privacy. Fairly depressive, in total ? but these days, Chesney sounds more convincing when he's less upbeat,? wrote Rolling Stone reviewer Chuck Eddy, who also writes favorably about Chesney in his recent book, ?Rock and Roll Always Forgets.?

Chesney pushing the boundaries of what constitutes country has kept his music interesting since he hit superstar status after years of struggle in the 1990s. These days, Chesney?s big struggle is how to maintain some semblance of a private life in the age of Facebook and YouTube, where very little of what anyone does is personal anymore.

The title track of Chesney?s latest album, which he co-wrote, addresses this issue. The idea for the song came about, he told USA Today, after some of his football buddies saw him mobbed by fans after he walked into a Florida bar: ?After that died down, one of those guys said, ?I didn't realize your life was like this.? I said, ?Hey, man, welcome to the fishbowl.? ?

Chesney elaborated further on the theme of the song to Country Music Television: ?More than anything, the way we live today is what inspired this song. You don?t have to be a celebrity to live like we?re living. Because now, more than ever, you don't have to be in the public eye like me to lose your privacy. So this song is not about any level of celebrity or the negativity that comes with that. It could very easily have gone that way. There?s a line in the song that says, ?You don't have to be famous to be a star. Just get caught on video, and there you are.? ?

He's also starting a summer tour?on Saturday, June 23, with Tim McGraw, who guests on the first single, ?Feel Like a Rock Star,??off Chesney?s new album. While the tour will probably prove to be one of the summer?s biggest concert draws for country fans, a host of other country acts will be touring in the coming months as well, and will be just as likely to fill arenas. These include Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Sugarland and Carrie Underwood.

But beyond the concert stage, there?s one more place that anyone who loves country should go starting Friday. That?s the movie theater.

June 22 is when ?The Last Ride,? a biopic of the late Hank Williams, opens. The film tells of the troubled final days of the country music pioneer who influenced Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, among many, many others. Beyond looking closely at Williams, the film will also provide some historical perspective to country fans, in much the way the Johnny Cash biopic ?Walk the Line? did in 2005. And while ?The Last Ride? might not be getting the pre-opening buzz of "Walk the Line" (beyond the fact that Henry Thomas from ?E.T.? stars in the title role), you can bet it?ll feature some pretty great music.

Which country act are you most looking forward to catching this summer? Mosey on over to our Facebook page and let us know.

Banks still at risk of losing customers, report shows

By Herb Weisbaum, The ConsumerMan

Successful businesses know how to make their customers happy. Apparently, many of the nation?s big banks still have not learned that lesson. A new report from Javelin Strategy & Research shows a high percentage of account holders are unhappy enough to consider pulling their money.?

The report concludes that the banking industry ?remains highly vulnerable to switching? as customers weigh fees and convenience.?

About 11 percent of the people surveyed in March 2012 say they are ?very likely or likely? to switch financial institutions in the next 12 months. Javelin says these ?vulnerable customers? are valuable customers. They manage a total of $675 billion in deposits.?Even more significant, their average deposits are 30 percent higher than customers who have no intention of leaving.?

The report says customer dissatisfaction runs high at four megabanks: Bank of America, Chase, Citibank and Wells Fargo. But Citibank and Bank of America have a ?far higher risk? of losing customers than their rivals.?

?Those two banks have double the vulnerability of banks overall,? says Javelin senior analyst Mark Schwanhausser.?

About 25 percent of Citibank customers and 21 percent of Bank of America customers told Javelin they are ?very likely or likely? to switch primary financial institutions in the next year.?

Bank Transfer Day fizzled, but ??
Remember November 11, 2011? It was the day American consumers were going to teach the big banks a lesson. We?d make them pay for their arrogance and ever-higher fees by moving our money to community banks and credit unions.?

The Javelin report calls Bank Transfer Day ?a bust? because only three percent of the country?s bank customers switched financial institutions during the fourth quarter.?The report says that rate was unchanged from the previous quarter and ?generally consistent? with previous periods.?

?Certainly people opened up accounts at smaller institutions, maybe added some deposits, and many credit unions are happy as a result of that,? Schwanhausser says. ?But from the viewpoint of where do people do most of their banking, they stuck around at the same places.??

It seems changing banks is a lot like moving. You hate the leaking faucets and the old carpet in your apartment, but you just can?t deal with the hassle of packing up everything.?

In a report released last month, Consumers Union said customers face a series of obstacles that make it a hassle to change banks.?It can be a pain to switch direct deposit and automatic bill pay transactions. There may also be a fee to close the account.?

Consumers Union visited the websites of the top 10 banks and found that they don?t give clear instructions about how to close an account. In many cases, secret shoppers who contacted the banks got conflicting advice from different representatives of the same bank.?

"When it's too much of a pain to switch banks, then where is the incentive for the big banks to keep prices competitive or offer the kind of services you want?" asks Consumers Union staff Attorney Suzanne Martindale.?

Javelin found that people are willing to pay for specific bank services when they believe they?re getting something for their money. These include money orders, cashier?s checks, safe deposit boxes and mobile deposit (where you take a picture of a check and deposit it).?

The giant banks are still the first place people look to for the convenience of branch locations and ATMs. But Javelin tells them not to get complacent, because large numbers of customers are not happy.?

The report says to remain successful, financial institutions big and small need to emphasize self-service technology, such as online banking, bill pay, personal finance management, financial alerts, and funds transfers.?Mobile banking, mobile deposit, and mobile-imaging capabilities are also considered important because they give customers anytime/anywhere?control of their money.?

My two cents?
Yes, it takes time a little time and it may cost you a few dollars to switch financial institutions. But if you don?t like the one you have, find a new one. Bank protests won?t bring about change. If you really want to send a message: vote with your wallet.?

For consumer tips on switching banks, see Consumers Union?s Move Your Money Checklist. ?

Some of the new regulations on banks have been eating into their profits which means they're finding new ways to make money: by charging additional fees. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

Choosing Youth Baseball Or Softball Equipment to Purchase ...

We are deep into spring already, and baseball and softball seasons are in full swing. Children are practicing and playing on fields all across America. And parents are faced with decision making. It?s off to the sporting goods stores to purchase softball baseball equipment. But which softball baseball equipment do you buy for your little slugger? It?s best to have an idea before you start shopping. Don?t let overzealous sales clerks talk you into baseball softball equipment you don?t need.

Usually it is as easy as what type of child you have. Boys play baseball and girls play softball when they are children. So then it is down to what position they play. Once you figure all this out, you can begin to purchase your child?s softball baseball equipment.

First, let?s examine softball equipment. Softballs are larger versions of baseballs. Softballs range from 11 to 12 inches and contrary to their name are hard like baseballs. They should be provided by the team, but your child will need some of their own to practice. Since softballs are large, it only makes sense that softball gloves and mitts are also larger. Each child will need one of their own. Softball bats are a different story. Softball bats are actually shorter than baseball bats. Softball bats are no longer than 34 inches long. These should be provided by the team also, but once again it?s good to have one for practice.

Baseball & softball bats can be made out of a number of materials. In the beginning, players used baseball & softball bats made from wood. As the sports and technology progressed, baseball & softball bats were made from metal. These are the ones you see being used most. Finally, there are carbon fiber baseball softball bats, but they are a little high tech for youth teams.

So what other softball gear might your child need? Protective helmets for all players are an important safety item of softball equipment. Every batter needs one. Every player needs cleats as well. Here, youth baseball cleats would probably be fine. If your child opts to be a catcher, then they?ll need shin guards and a chest protector and mask as part of their personal softball gear. Perhaps the catcher is the most expensive position to consider.

The final piece of softball equipment needed is softball uniforms. There is a standard to softball uniforms, but they do differ in colors, names and sponsorships. This is where a team can get creative with their softball gear and really make them their own.

So what about the baseball side of softball & baseball equipment? Well, it really isn?t that different from softball equipment. Baseballs are 9 inches and baseball bats are no longer than 42 inches. As discussed previously, there are three materials to choose from in baseball softball bats. Baseball players use gloves and wear helmets. Each child should have one of each, as well as a pair of youth baseball cleats. As with all youth shoes, make sure your child?s youth baseball cleats fit them properly. Catchers in this sport wear shin guards, a chest protector and a mask as well. Baseball uniforms are hard to distinguish from softball uniforms. Again this is an area where teams can show their creativity.

There really isn?t too much mystery when it comes to softball & baseball equipment. The differences between the two sports are few, which makes sense since softball came out of baseball. Baseball equipment can be substituted for softball equipment in a few areas if you have hand me downs. Helmets and youth baseball cleats come to mind. So do baseball softball bats. Both sports can become expensive, but the benefits of youth sports far outweigh the costs. Don?t let finances stand in your way. Look into used softball & baseball equipment, but get those boys and girls out on the field.
