Sitcom creators mine laughs from their real lives

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Got a goofy older brother? Parents you still live with even though you're grown up? An unconventional friendship?

If so, you're too late to turn those ideas into a hit sitcom.

But while you comb your life for something else to fuel a comedy that a network will love, consider three fall sitcoms spawned from the personal lives of their creators.

CBS' "Partners" explores the lifelong friendship of Louis, who's gay, and Joe, who's straight, as they navigate their architecture business and their respective romantic ties. Their best-friends dynamic is inspired by the friendship of Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, who met in high school and, after partnering as TV producers, co-created shows including the megahit "Will & Grace."

There's no attempt to hide the lineage of Fox's "Ben & Kate." It's the tale of a freewheeling brother, Ben, who comes back into the life of his single-mother younger sister, Kate, to serve as a surrogate dad while continuing his lifelong role as a mischievous child. The show is based on the relationship of its creator, Dana Fox, with her own big brother, whose name is, yes, Ben.

Meanwhile, ABC's "How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life" finds a young mom from a broken marriage seeking refuge at her parents' with her young daughter. It was drawn from the domestic situation of creator Claudia Lonow, who well into adulthood and despite career success (including producing the sitcom "Less than Perfect"), continues to live with parents she describes as "charismatic," ''super entertaining" and "very weird."

"I've been living there for 15 years, and I've been (developing) the show for about 12," Lonow told reporters this week at the Television Critics Association conference.

Like Polly (played by Sarah Chalke), who descends on TV parents Brad Garrett and Elizabeth Perkins, "I did show up at their doorstep and say, 'I hope this isn't a bad time for YOU, because it is for ME.'

"They reacted like any loving mother and stepfather would," Lenow recalled, and took her and her daughter in.

"We slept in the weight room on a cot for a while. And then, when it was time for my daughter to go to grammar school, I bought a house with them. I know it was crazy," she said with a laugh. "It's like there should be a show about it!"

Sitcoms that smack of autobiography are nothing new, of course. "I Love Lucy" 60 years ago took its cue from the show-biz-infused marital life of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

But Dana Fox has been gathering material for "Ben and Kate" since the cradle thanks to her brother, Ben, who's two years her senior.

She describes him as a "Ferris Bueller-type guy ... a really, really smart guy who intentionally does incredibly dumb things that would get us into so much trouble.

"He doesn't think a lot before he jumps," she said, "but he usually has a totally bizarre logic to all of his behavior."

Item: Once when they were kids, their mom came home to find the whole house smelling like a dead animal. Ben had put his down-feather pillow in the microwave for 10 minutes on low, "to heat it up because he was cold."

Fox took pains to say that on "Ben and Kate" the siblings' relationship (portrayed by Nat Faxon and Dakota Johnson) more closely mirrors her connection with Ben Fox when they were somewhat younger. She stressed that, in truth, her brother grew up, married, had two children and has become a responsible father, though she added, "I give a ton of credit to his wife, who's a psychologist."

But if real-life Ben settled down a bit ? with a successful career in advertising ? he remains a cutup. He still calls his sister "Phlegm-er," she reports, "which is totally disgusting and super humiliating." And she says that, while he's delighted about the show, he's not surprised he earned such a tribute. Instead, he marvels "that it hasn't happened before now."

"The Partners" is a buddy comedy about a gay guy and a straight guy (played by Michael Urie and David Krumholtz) who are best friends. It was created by a gay guy and a straight guy who have been best friends since they were teens.

"I think every gay man should have a straight man in his life," said Mutchnick, who, on realizing in high school he was gay, had a friend in Kohan he could talk about it with. "I was lucky enough that I was able to create a life and a great career with him, too."

But how true-to-life are the sitcom versions of these partners? Mutchnick was asked if, for instance, he's as self-obsessed as the volatile, comical character Louis.

"Absolutely!" Mutchnick fired back, and added instantly, "Do you have any OTHER questions about me?"

Beat-Up Chinese Paper Stocks May Be Poised To Rise

Beat-up shares in Chinese paper producers may be poised to rise in the second half of 2012, ?Northeastern Securities of Jilin said in a research report on Saturday.

Shares of leading suppliers such as Nine Dragons Paper, Lee & Man Paper, and Sun Paper? have tumbled in the past year on excess industry supplies and weak international demand, ?cutting into the fortunes of some of the region?s richest businesspeople.? (See related story here about Lee & Man).

Among the biggest losers, Shenzhen-traded Shandong Sun Paper sank to a three-year closing low of 5.03 yuan on Thursday, before edging up 0.01 yuan on Friday.? Sun?s chairman Li Hongxin ranked No. 157 on the 2011 Forbes China Rich List with wealth of $955 million yet today he?s worth only a little more than half that. (Click here for a link to the 2011 Forbes China Rich List.)

However, ?shares may be poised to rise, Northeastern Securities said. First-half?profit at another big industry supplier,? Shandong Chenming Paper, for instance, won?t be below 72 million yuan, or US$11 million, according to a projection by the company on July 12. Because actual first-quarter profit was 15 million yuan, that implies net income in the second quarter shouldn?t be any lower than 57 million yuan, almost quadruple the preceding three-month period. The company officially projected second-quarter net income would be in a range of 72-150 million yuan.

To be sure, that?s a big fall of 70-85% compared with a year ago.? But ?the light of dawn? may be on the horizon, Northeastern said.

Gunmen take over Sanaa interior ministry building: official

SANAA (Reuters) - About 100 armed tribesmen stormed the Interior Ministry building in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Sunday demanding to be enlisted in the police force, a ministry official said.

The tribesmen, who have taken control of the building, briefly held some employees hostage before freeing them a few hours later, the official said, but they were still occupying the building.

Tribesmen have fought alongside government troops in a U.S.-backed offensive against al Qaeda-linked militants that drove insurgents out of several towns in the south of the country last month. Many tribal fighters also sided with former President Ali Abdullah Saleh who was toppled by a popular uprising.

Iran Civil Society Review ? Uncovering, International Awards ...

We are back from our brief break! In this week?s review, Iranian organizations and individuals receive awards for their work on HIV/AIDS while Mississippi doctors try to fix healthcare inequalities by learning from Iran and Iran?s Supreme Leader puts an end to family planning. The Unveil a Woman?s Right to Unveil goes from Facebook to the streets of Iran, residents in Neyshapour take to the streets to protest inflation, and a report shows the lopsided impact of economic sanctions on women. A group of citizens cleans a park in Isfahan and the loss of Iranian identity is lamented.

Red Ribbon Award for Combatting HIV (Click to tweet)

This past week Iranian organizations and individuals were in the news receiving awards for their work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Afraye Sabz Association, an organization in Kermanshah Province won the Red Ribbon Award given by UNAIDS each year to recognize exceptional work in AIDS prevention. Afraye Sabz was honored for its work on HIV awareness, its educational programs, and its support for people living with HIV and their families.

In related news, the brothers Arash and Kamiar Alaei, who were imprisoned for several years in Iran on security charges, received the Elizabeth Taylor Award. The award was given to acknowledge their work in HIV prevention and human rights in the field of HIV.

?Unveil Women?s Right to Unveil? Reaches Iran?s Streets? (Click to tweet)

The ?Unveil the Right to Unveil? campaign is still underway. Many have joined in sending their photos and the message of the campaign has now reached the streets inside Iran. A recent post on the official page of the campaign shows wall graffiti in the city of Bojnord in North Eastern Iran that reads:

Free Hijab, Iranian Women?s Right?

Source: Unveil the Right to Unveil campaign page on Facebook. This photo is said to have been taken in the city of Bojnord from the entrance of a girls? high school.

In an interview with Arseh Sevom (in Persian) the journalist Masih Alinejad and campaign developer Sahar Rezazadeh discuss the campaign. They talk about its influence inside Iran and in the diaspora. They also ask women to share their stories of forced hijab. ?It?s a very important part of our history,? Alinejad states.

Me and my Free Dress

Following a request from Masih Alinejad that instead of only sending out photos women can share their stories of living through the mandatory hijab in Iran, the feminist campaign female = male / ?? = ??? asked their 137K followers to submit their experiences. Many women joined to share their memories of how they were affected and belittled on a daily basis by the proponents and enforcers of compulsory hijab. Exiled author, Ahoo Shokraie is one example. She recalls (our translation):

My mother did not let me and my sister wear a headscarf until the last days,? [when we reached puberty and had to observe the hijab]. It was my fear of the morals police headquartered at Vozara street or the craven looks in the eyes of other men that caused even my mother started to say, ?This dress is too tight.? My father would comment, ?This is too short? and my sister: ?Today is a religious holiday, don?t wear this one.? It wasn?t long before I reached the day when my own son, the grandchild of that woman who never sewed a headscarf for us, walked beside me and told me what to wear and how much my scarf could go back on my hairline.

Members of Dating Website Arrested

IRNA state news agency reports that seven members of what this agency describes as ?an unconventional dating website? have been arrested. The Iranian cyber police told IRNA that ?four of the detained people are under the age of 20.? The Iranian cyber police warned Iranian families that ?online dating is a new phenomenon spreading in Iran.? And families should ?have a close look at the activities of their children.?

Identity Crisis?

Mehr News Agency cites an education expert expressing concern over the alienation of Iranian students from their history and heritage. Morteza Nazari told Mehr, ?Textbooks lack the smallest reference to the glorious aspects of Iranian civilization and the undeniable contribution of the Iranian thoughout mankind.? He added, ?Contrary to all that has been said by the officials of the Ministry of Education, the role of families is more significant in familiarizing children with the history, culture, and civilization of Iranians than the national educational system and families will have to take matters in their own hands.?

Earlier in September 2009, the Ministry of Education announced, ?Kings will be gradually omitted from students? history books.?

Economic Sanctions Hurt Women

ICAN has published a report on the effects of economic sanctions on women in Iran, noting that women suffer in multiple ways because of the sanctions regime. The report states that economic sanctions inhibit the education of women, isolate Iranians from the international community, lead to increased violence against women linked to high levels of male?unemployment, and threaten Afghan refugees and their children.?(Read the report here ? pdf)

?We Didn?t Revolt for Chicken? (Click to tweet)

While long queues to buy chicken are epidemic in Iran, people in the city of Neyshabour took to the streets in protest; a video clip of the incident can be seen here.

In response, the general and revolutionary prosecutor of Neyshabour reportedly said, ?It is beneath the dignity of Neyshabouri people to protest in the streets, to chant slogans for one or two chickens? We didn?t revolt for bread and water [in 1979], and we are not bearing all the hardship now if anything happens, if things worsen.?

Prison Guard, a New Academic Major

Meanwhile, Iranian universities are to offer a new program called Prison guarding.

No More Family Planning, I Say (Click to tweet)

Reversing Iran?s traditionally progressive stance on family planning, Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, has called for an abolishment of family planning laws. Khamenei is quoted as saying, ?Our country has the capacity to house double the current population.?

In response to his recent ruling, Shargh newspaper published a report stating that in Tehran the family planning budget has now been cut to zero. The opposition website Neda-ye Sabz-e Azadi [Iran Green Voice] posted the news of a ?Mothers Social Marketing Project? launched as a pilot plan in Tehran to facilitate population growth.

Learning from Iran (Click to tweet)

The New York Times published the piece, What Can Mississippi Learn From Iran?, about the common problems delivering healthcare to poor, rural families throughout Iran and in Mississippi. The article documents the efforts of Mississippi doctor, Aaron Shirley, to learn from Iran?s model of preventative care in rural areas, which has lessened gaps in access to healthcare among the rural and urbanized populations.

Democratic report blasts for-profit colleges

(AP) ? For-profit colleges put revenues above education, and charge students high tuition and loan rates that could leave them in debt for years, a Senate Democratic report said Monday.

While students are aggressively recruited, they drop out in high numbers without the degree or certificate initially sought, the report said. It found that 54 percent of students enrolled in 2008-2009 left without a degree or certificate by mid-2010. When two-year associate degree programs were studied, 63 percent left without a degree.

The staff report was issued by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The report said veterans were among those vulnerable to the tactics by for-profit schools, since these colleges receive the largest share of military educational benefit programs. Eight of the top 10 recipients of GI bill money since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks went to for-profit education companies.

The report said reaching an enrollment quota was found to be the highest priority for recruiters. Publicly traded companies operating these schools had an average profit margin of 19.7 percent. They paid an average of $7.3 million in 2009 to top executives, while the five highest paid leaders of large public universities averaged $1 million and leaders at nonprofit colleges averaged $3 million.

Steve Gunderson, president and chief executive officer of the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities, dismissed the report as inaccurate.

"Unfortunately, Sen. Harkin's report continues in the tradition of ideology overriding reality," said Gunderson, a former Republican congressman from Wisconsin. "The report twists the facts to fit a narrative, proving that this is nothing more than continued political attacks on private sector colleges and universities."

He said some of the report's statistics are misleading and added, "Instead of joining the conversation about ways to expand access to postsecondary education, Sen. Harkin is attacking schools that are currently providing instruction to 3.8 million students. Today's students already face enough challenges accessing postsecondary education without these sorts of distractions."

According to the report, students at for-profit schools faced tuition for bachelor's programs that averaged 20 percent more than for similar programs at flagship public universities. Associated degree programs averaged four times the cost of similar programs at comparable community colleges, and certificate programs averaged four-and-a-half times the cost at comparable community colleges.

"Recruiting materials indicate that at some for-profit colleges, admission representatives were trained to locate and push on the pain in students' lives," the report said.

Once the students were enrolled, 96 percent needed student loans, according to Department of Education information. Fifty-seven percent of bachelor's degree students who graduated from a for-profit college owed $30,000 or more, compared to 25 percent of those earning degrees in the private, nonprofit sector and 12 percent from public colleges.

"Because many students who attend for-profit colleges are unable to get financing through private lending companies, many participate in institutional loan programs operated by for-profit education companies," the report said.

In 2009, seven large for-profit education companies offered institutional loans with interest rates ranging from 11.2 percent to 18 percent. During the same period, the Stafford federal loan rate was 5.6 percent.

In addition to the high loan rates and debt, students leaving private colleges hard a difficult time finding jobs.

The report cited a national study by an education center that found 23 percent of students who attended for-profit schools in 2008-09 were unemployed and seeking work.

State radio systems upgrade could cut regional dispatchers out of ...

Regional dispatchers are worried they will be out of the communications loop after state public safety departments such as state police, warden and forestry services and marine patrol upgrade their radio communication systems from analog to digital.

The upgrade for the state departments, known as the MS Comnet project, carries a price tag of about $55 million, and when it is done will allow state public safety officials from Kittery to Madawaska to communicate via radio, according to Jim Ryan, executive director for Penobscot County Regional Communications.

But regional dispatch centers will need to upgrade to digital systems to hear the new transmissions.

And Ryan said when the state originally went out to sell the upgrade to legislators and community officials they proposed an analog system. In anticipation, Penobscot County purchased analog equipment to coordinate with the state, the state announced they were going digital, he said.

He said it would cost $500,000 for Penobscot County to acquire new equipment that would be compatible with the state system.

Knox County Regional Communications Center Director Linwood Lothrop also expressed similar concerns about the new state radio system and said it would make it more difficult for county dispatches to keep track of what is going on with state units.

Lt. Col. Raymond Bessette of the Maine State Police said the digital upgrade has been necessary for years to meet capacity needs for state emergency personnel.

The upgrade will allow many more radio frequencies that will serve emergency responders when they respond to escalating situations.

Bessette said the state asked the vendor for the radio upgrade to allow its county and municipal partners to hear the state radio communications and that will be done.

The public will also be able to follow the radio communications, although they will need to purchase digital scanners, he said.

Sports Fans Angered By TV Images Of Empty Seats At London Games

TV images of half-empty stands at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games have angered sports fans and launched an inquiry to identify who had failed to show up and why.

London organizing committee (LOCOG) chairman Sebastian Coe had threatened to name sponsors that did not fill their seats, but now says the missing spectators were mostly officials from international sports federations, other Olympic officials, their families and friends.

Coe said, "it doesn't obviously appear to be a sponsorship issue at the moment". He said that only eight per cent of allocated tickets went to big corporate sponsors such as Visa and Coca-Cola, and that 75 per cent of the tickets were in the hands of the public.

While the cycling road race and rowing events seats were filled Saturday, Coe said that other events such as basketball, gymnastics, swimming and tennis had empty seats because they had been held open for officials like himself making short visits to venues or wrestling with busy schedules.

He added that London organizers were trying to fill spare sets by inviting local children and teachers to use the spare tickets, selling more tickets, handing tickets to the military, and upgrading other ticket holders.

Organizers said they were already in touch with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to find out who failed to show up and why.

Police have identified the suspected shooter as James Holmes, 24. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

(AP) ? The Colorado movie theater complex that was the scene of a gunman's massacre this month didn't have any uniformed security guards on duty the night of the shooting, even though other theaters operated by the same company did provide such protection for the busy premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

It's impossible to know whether guards ? often off-duty police officers ? at the Aurora Century 16 would have spotted the suspected gunman, James Holmes, and thwarted the attack that left 12 moviegoers dead and dozens wounded on July 20.

Officers hired as guards are generally armed and usually spend their time roaming the complex, checking bags or dealing with minor disputes.

Cinemark provided off-duty police guards at the Aurora theater on busy Friday and Saturday nights. As for other nights of the week, theater operators decide on a case-by-case basis whether to hire security, depending on the likelihood of trouble. The attack came early Friday, shortly after the midnight screening of the Batman film began.

Larry Lowak, whose son Brent was among the wounded, said security personnel on the scene possibly could have stopped the gunman, and he was dismayed to learn that guards weren't on hand.

"If you bring in security on Friday or Saturday, you sure as hell want to bring it in for this particular function," Lowak said.

Plano, Texas-based Cinemark, which operates the Aurora theater, declined to explain why guards weren't provided in Aurora that night and declined to discuss safety policies in general.

Through interviews with police officers and officials outside the theater company, The Associated Press was able to identify places around the country that did use armed security workers for the July 19-20 Batman showings ? including places like Beaumont, Texas; Lake Charles, La., and Tupelo, Miss.

Some other locations, including a Cinema Century 16 theater in the western Denver suburb of Lakewood, did not have security.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates has said that the Cinemark in Aurora normally uses off-duty officers to provide security on weekend nights but did not have any working for the July 19 showings that went into the next morning. The theater does not have an unusually high record of complaints or crimes, police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said.

In Moosic, Pa., Cinemark has worked for years with off-duty officers from the local police department ? typically on Fridays and Saturdays ? and authorities said they were asked to provide two officers on July 19 because the midnight showing was likely to be a major event.

"If they're expecting large crowds, they call our department for additional police presence," said Moosic Borough Police Officer James Giehl.

Two major multiplexes in Amarillo, Texas, including one Cinemark facility, also ensured that off-duty uniformed police officers were present for the first screenings of the Batman film. Amarillo Police Cpl. Jerry Neufeld said that the off-duty officers work in pairs; the town's theaters made a point of asking for them on the busy opening night.

There were no incidents at the screenings, and Neufeld said he heard that people were, as always, happy to see people there to deal with any dangers.

"When they're there, they're visible, people see them and people come in and say, 'hey man, we're glad you're here,'" Neufeld said. "It gives people a sense of calm."

The Aurora shooting has stirred discussion about appropriate security precautions at gathering places commonly considered safe from the cares and worries of the outside world. Experts say that security at public venues has increased substantially over the past decade, but they also note that it's impossible to maintain perfect safety at all times.

Officials have said the Aurora shooting suspect bought a ticket to the midnight showing and went into the theater as part of the crowd. A federal law enforcement official said suspect Holmes is believed to have propped open an exit door in the theater as the movie was playing, donned protective ballistic gear, re-entered about a half-hour into the film and opened fire.

Aurora police said the suspect tossed two gas canisters into the crowd and had an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun, and two .40-caliber Glock handguns.

Some theaters have added security guards for all nights of the week since the shooting, and police departments around the country have also conducted extra patrols that focus to movie theaters, though it's not clear if those shifts will be permanent. AMC Theatres has barred people from wearing masks or bringing fake weapons inside its buildings.

Many theaters, including the Cinemark in Aurora, prohibit patrons from bringing in their concealed weapons they use for personal protection.

That irks people like Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, who said that he has refused to go to Aurora theater because of that ban.

"What could have stopped this is law-abiding citizens being allowed to carry," Brown insisted.

Lowak, the father of the shooting survivor, also said he believes people carrying concealed weapons might have helped limit the bloodshed.

But Hubert Williams, former head of the Newark police department and president of the Police Foundation, said that the idea that average citizens with guns could keep a theater safe only makes sense "on a piece of paper."

"Reality is much more complicated. What if you pull a gun out, take aim and someone else thinks you're the shooter?" he asked. "Would you stand up against an AR-15, AK-47 military-style assault weapon? Give me a break."

Romanian president tries to evade impeachment

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania's unpopular President Traian Basescu may survive an impeachment referendum on Sunday thanks to a requirement that turnout must be more than half for the vote to be valid.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta's leftist government has suspended Basescu and their campaign to unseat the president has brought a stern dressing-down from Brussels over respect for the judiciary and the rule of law.

Ponta's Social Liberal Union (USL) took office in May and is asking Romanians to vote on whether to impeach Basescu for overstepping his powers. He is unpopular for backing austerity and perceptions of cronyism.

Polls show some 65 percent want to remove former sea captain from office, but that the USL will struggle to achieve the required 50 percent plus one turnout after the opposition called for a boycott of the vote.

On Friday, the last day of campaigning, Basescu also asked for a boycott.

He had initially urged Romanians to vote to defeat what he called a coup d'etat, but his stance gradually shifted this week when he and his Democrat Liberal allies said they were concerned about the possibility of electoral fraud.

"I think there will be less than half of voters who turn up, and so Basescu will remain the president," said statistician Vlad Pietreanu.

The government had sought to make it easier to impeach Basescu by removing the minimum turnout rule, but it was forced to back down after harsh EU criticism and to abide by a Constitutional Court ruling on voter numbers.

The bickering has delayed policymaking and raised doubts over Romania's 5 billion euro International Monetary Fund-led aid deal and sent the leu currency plunging to record lows, while borrowing costs have risen.

Romania has made progress since the 1989 overthrow of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and joined the EU in 2007, but the economy slipped back into recession in the first quarter and pockets of severe poverty remain.

Brussels has a wide range of levers to pressure Romania, whose justice system is under EU monitoring. Romania gets European cash to help it catch up with other members and the EU contributes to its IMF-led deal.

Ponta felt the full weight of EU wrath after his government took on the Constitutional Court, threatening to replace judges, reduce its powers and ignoring one of its decisions.

He committed to a series of pledges to the EU that he would respect the rule of law and independence of the judiciary, though Brussels has responded that it still has not yet seen concrete action, for example in naming a neutral public ombudsman rather than a USL loyalist.

If Basescu is impeached, a presidential election will be held within three months. USL co-leader Crin Antonescu would remain interim president until the vote, which could delay a parliamentary election currently expected in November.

Twitter Severs Ties to Instagram: Smart Business ... - Marketing Pilgrim

These past few weeks, Twitter?s been the two-year-old jumping up and down next to mom while she tries to work. They announced targeting for Promoted Tweets, covertly revealed their plans to make a web series and as of tonight, they?re all over the Olympics.

But you know how those toddlers can get into trouble and Twitter has been true to form. On Thursday, the site went dark for more than an hour, the second big outage in under two months. They say it was a server issue and that even their redundant systems failed. I think it?s a conspiracy to test the reaction to a nation left without social media and specific internet services because on the same night, Amazon, IMDB, and Netflix all went down. Coincidence or carefully planned madness?

Or could it be a publicity stunt for the new TV series Revolution which is about survival after a catastrophic event knocks out all the power on the planet?

Call me paranoid if you must, but Twitter also made a move against Instagram this week. They cut the ties to the Find a Friend portion of the Instagram app which seems like it will hurt them more than it hurts Instagram.

Instagram has 80 million users, all of whom could have used the Find a Friend feature to access their pals on Twitter but apparently Twitter doesn?t care. Just like they didn?t care when they cut off LinkedIn.

Twitter?s new stance is, if you want to play with my toys, you have to play in my yard and that?s kind of mean. Some think the Instagram boot is a direct result of their connection to Facebook. Others think that Twitter is planning to release their own photo option to compete with Instagram. Whatever the reason, it?s starting to feel like bad business.

Twitter didn?t get where they are by surrounding themselves with high walls. Social media is about being social and that means sharing with your friends from all over the neighborhood.

I?m a big fan of Twitter, but I?m starting to worry about where this new attitude will lead them. What do you think? Was it smart business to cut off Instagram and LinkedIn, or is Twitter heading for trouble?

Four arrested over Ivory Coast U.N. peacekeeper killings

LONDON (Reuters) - Four men have been arrested in connection with the ambush killings in Ivory Coast of seven U.N. peacekeepers on its border with Liberia, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said on Friday.

An adviser to Ouattara said the four had been arrested in Liberia and would be extradited to Ivory Coast to stand trial.

The seven United Nations peacekeepers, all from Niger, were killed on June 8 when their patrol came under fire near the town of Tai, close to the porous border, in what Ivorian authorities said was a cross-border raid.

"We have just arrested four people who perpetrated that attack and killed the seven peacekeepers," President Alassane Ouattara said during a visit to London, where he was planning to watch the Olympics opening ceremony.

He said those arrested included "the head of the operation", but gave no further information as to the identities or nationalities of the four men.

Liberian government officials said they were not immediately able to comment on Ouattara's remarks while Ivory Coast's U.N. mission, UNOCI, said it was not aware of any arrests.

A decade of north-south partition and simmering political crisis in the world's top cocoa grower ended last year with a brief but brutal civil war that erupted after former President Laurent Gbagbo refused to acknowledge defeat in 2010 polls.

Around 3,000 died before Gbagbo was captured by troops loyal to Ouattara, who were backed by French and U.N. forces. Gbagbo is in The Hague awaiting trial before the International Criminal Court accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

RIVAL SUPPORTERS

Chanting supporters and opponents of Ouattara gathered outside the venue where he spoke but were kept apart by police barriers.

Ouattara said a national commission of enquiry had completed an investigation on July 18 into crimes committed by the two warring factions during the conflict, but said he had not yet seen its findings.

"When the battle started you had atrocities committed, probably by both sides," he said. "But this needs an enquiry, that's why we set up the National Enquiry Commission...when I go back I will have the report."

The U.N. Security Council renewed UNOCI's mandate on Thursday, reducing its military force by one battalion, or around 700 to 1,000 soldiers, to just under 9,000 troops.

FIRST GOLD

And the first gold medal has gone to China. Yi Siling has just triumphed in the women's 10-meter air rifle shooting.

___

SLOW PHELPS

Michael Phelps was surprisingly slow in the 400-meter individual medley prelims Saturday. He barely made the field and will swim in Lane 8 in the final.

No big deal, right? All lanes are the same.

Not exactly, according to a tweet from former Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders: "Lane 8 is worse than Lane 1 because Phelps breathes to the right on the way home. He won't see the rest of the field."

"Call me chauvinistic, call me jingoistic, but I think we knocked the spots off Beijing last night," Johnson said.

"From the beginning I was crying like a baby. I just thought it was brilliant."

He lauded the cultural complexity of Danny Boyle's production.

"We weren't just Beefeaters and Big Ben. It was the real story of this country," he said.

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

There's a battle for authority at points along Saturday morning's cycling road course. Even soldiers are being ordered around.

A military man in uniform demanded to be allowed to cross the road. A female police officer told him he could go through the gate, but the volunteer refused to open it. They all argued before he climbed atop the gate, saying simply "I'm crossing!"

He then fell hard on his knees on the pavement.

TWO-WAY TRAFFIC

At 7 a.m. fresh-eyed fans were streaming into Olympic Park ready for the action. On their commute, they couldn't help but notice the stragglers going home in the opposite direction. And some were still in party mode.

Near King's Cross station in central London, in an apparent attempt to inject some Winter Olympics ice dance action into the celebrations, one man picked up his girlfriend and straddled her on his shoulders before (successfully) spinning her around two or three times and gently placing her back down on the footpath, giving the early morning travellers their first smiles of the day.

COMING UP

Beach volleyball in the heart of central London will highlight Olympic competition Saturday, along with the first swimming medals. American rivals Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will face off in the 400-meter individual medley.

Two-time U.S. defending gold medalist pair Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor will be the feature match in the beach volleyball grandstand.

"It's amazing. Just this area in itself is so special," Walsh Jennings said. "You have the Horse Guards right there and the changing of the guard and you get to see this and all the historic culture. FLASHBACK ? BERLIN 1936: "Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler, attired in a brown uniform and smiling genially, formally launched the Eleventh Olympiad today amid ceremonies dazzlingly brilliant despite dripping skies marked by vividly contrasting demonstrations obviously fraught with political as well as sporting significance. ... The big United States delegation, surpassed in size only by the Germans who formed the procession as rear guard, was accorded a doubtful reception. Changing plans suddenly overnight to avoid the appearance of giving only a modified Nazi salute under the original intentions to extend arms with hats in hand, the Americans reverted to the former custom of doffing their hats and placing them over the heart while giving 'eyes right.'"

ROYAL BOND GIRL

Queen Elizabeth II made her acting debut as a Bond girl in just one take. The 86-year-old monarch appeared as herself in a short film for the London Olympics opening ceremony with James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

In the film, Craig arrived at her private study in Buckingham Palace, where she said "Good evening, Mr. Bond" before the pair boarded a helicopter.

BBC's director of Drama Production, Nicholas Brown, told The Telegraph newspaper that the queen gave a professional performance and "got it in one take."

___

FLASHBACK - LONDON 1908: "Lord Desbrough marched up with the members of the Executive Committee and said: 'Will Your Majesty graciously declare the Olympic games opened?' In reply the King said: 'I declare the Olympic games of London open.' At the completion of this ceremony cheering broke out from all parts of the stadium. After the demonstration had died down, the athletes gave three cheers for His Majesty, and then marched past the royal box. The men made a splendid appearance, though unfortunately the weather prevented all the competitors from coming out in athletic costumes. The Americans were among those who wore street clothing, but even thus attired the size of the men evoked much favorable comment."

Phones4U quietly launches the ZTE Grand X, yours for ?199

Android Central

ZTE's new vanilla Android mid-ranger has landed at one UK store a little earlier than expected. The Grand X, which we saw at its launch event last week, is now available online at Phones4U, with on-contract prices starting at £15.50 per month, with a £50 up-front charge for the phone. Alternatively you can get it for free on contracts starting at £20.50 per month, or buy it outright for £199.

The Grand X is ZTE's effort to enter the premium handset market in the UK, with a phone sporting a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU and a near-stock Android 4.0 software experience. The phone also rocks a 4.3-inch qHD LCD display, 512MB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera and a microSD card slot. It's not bleeding edge by any means, but considering you'd have paid top whack for that kind of device less than a year ago, a £199 price tag seems more than reasonable. Vanilla ICS should also win the Grand X some admiration among Android purists.

Hit the link below for the full list of tariffs offered by Phones4U on Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile. And make sure to check out our hands-on report and video preview for more info on the phone itself.

(AP) ? A Canadian company that wants to build an oil pipeline from Alberta's tar sands region to Texas refineries has received a final permit for the Gulf Coast portion of the project and announced Friday that construction on the 485-mile section would start in the coming weeks.

President Barack Obama encouraged TransCanada to move ahead with the segment that will run from a refinery in Cushing, Okla. to Texas after he rejected the broader plan, saying the pipeline needed to be rerouted around Nebraska's sensitive Sand Hills region. For that project, TransCanada needs presidential approval because it crosses an international border. The shorter portion only requires permits from state and federal agencies. TransCanada said the final of three permits it needed from the Army Corps of Engineers had been approved.

"Receiving this final, key Army Corps permit for the Gulf Coast Project is very positive news. TransCanada is now poised to put approximately 4,000 Americans to work constructing the $2.3-billion pipeline that will be built in three distinct 'spreads' or sections," Russ Girling, TransCanada's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The line from Cushing will help relieve a bottleneck at the Oklahoma refinery, but doesn't fulfill TransCanada's broader goal of transporting more Canadian crude to U.S. refineries. Pipeline advocates say that would help decrease U.S. reliance on oil from unstable, sometimes unfriendly, countries, and provide much-needed jobs to an economy suffering from 8.2 percent unemployment.

But critics argue the tar sands oil is dirtier than most other heavy crudes refined in the United States and will further harm the air in the already polluted Gulf Coast. They also believe the crude's more acidic properties increase the risk for accidents and spills.

Chris Wilson, an organizer with Stop Tarsands Oil Pipelines, condemned the permitting of the pipeline.

"It appears that President Obama is only too happy to turn up the flow of toxic tar sands through our states, but we're here to say, 'Don't mess with Texas or Oklahoma,'" Wilson said in a statement. "TransCanada executives may be smirking today, but they've got another thing coming if they expect landowners and tribes to simply roll over for their dangerous pipeline."

The issue took on political importance when Republicans forced a deadline on Obama to rule on the broader 1,179-mile Keystone XL pipeline. Obama, saying it required further review and should be rerouted to avoid an area where a vital aquifer flows close to the surface, rejected the plan. TransCanada has since resubmitted a new plan to the U.S. State Department.

"The Gulf Coast Project and the entire Keystone system will further help the U.S. achieve true energy security," Girling said. "I continue to believe Americans would prefer to consume their crude oil from domestic producers and from Canada rather than higher-priced oil from countries that do not share American values."
