Jay-Z rocks Brooklyn arena he helped get built

Carlo Allegri / Reuters

Jay-Z performs on stage at the newly built Barclays Center in the Brooklyn borough of New York on Friday, Sept. 28.

By Simon Vozick-Levinson, Rolling Stone

"I've been on many stages, been around the world, but nothing feels like tonight," Jay-Z told the crowd Friday night during his inaugural blow-out at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. He reeled off a few of the other noted houses he's rocked: the Grammys, Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo, the Apollo Theater. "Nothing feels like tonight, Brooklyn. I swear to God."

Jay's performance -- the first ever in the newly constructed venue, with seven more sold-out shows scheduled over the next week -- was a many-layered milestone. While he famously grew up in Brooklyn's Marcy Houses, this was his first major show of this size in his home borough. As partial owner of the NBA's rechristened Brooklyn Nets, he helped get this billion-dollar basketball arena built not far from his old neighborhood. His rise to this level of success and cultural power is an incredible American story, and he is justifiably proud.

He opened the show aptly with 1997's classic "Where I'm From." It's a staple of his live sets, a song he's performed hundreds of times if not more. Friday night?-- center stage in jeans and a black puffy vest over a custom Nets jersey, gold chains hanging down his chest -- he attacked the verses with a new force, spitting out precise syllables: "I'm from where the hammers rung, news cameras never come. ..."

Jay stood alone under a spotlight on the narrow stage, backed by a huge sloping video screen and a tight live band built into perches above him. He paid tribute to a fallen mentor early on by building the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Kick in the Door" and "Juicy" into the set list. Later, shortly after an authoritative "99 Problems," he walked to a far corner of the stage and retrieved a glittering gold bottle, requesting respectful silence as he poured out a little bubbly for Biggie: "See, you can stunt like that when you own the whole place." He turned reflective, reminiscing aloud about his journey from the projects to this stage. "You don't mind if I take my time? I'm really overwhelmed a little bit."

He channeled the night's emotions into a top-notch rendition of the hit parade he's road tested at festivals and arenas over the last few years, covering his career from 1996's "Reasonable Doubt" to 2009's "The Blueprint 3" in a little over an hour. He delivered the key lines in 2001's great "Heart of the City" with extra emphasis, punching the air as he rapped, "I told you in '96 that I came to take this [expletive], and I did."

Henny Ray Abrams / AP

Fans arrive for the first of eight Jay-Z shows at the new Barclays Center.

As the main set wound down, Jay-Z looked out at the crowd of 18,000 reverent fans, savoring the moment. "What an amazing feeling tonight," he said again. "This night was a dream." He thanked everyone sincerely while the chords of 2003's "Encore" rolled quietly on. Someone in the crowd passed a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey with Jackie Robinson's name on it up to the stage, and he held it up with pride: "Look how far we've come."

Jay told Rolling Stone a few days ago?that there would be no guests at his Barclays Center shows. ("This is my one chance to be selfish!" he kidded.) He kept that promise until the encore, when he surprised the arena by bringing out Bed-Stuy legend Big Daddy Kane, who ripped through 1988's "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" and 1989's "Warm It Up, Kane," while busting out some old-school moves (complete with a full jumping split) with his original backup dancers Scoob and Scrap. "We have to understand our history," said Jay-Z appreciatively.

"OK, I'm still not ready to leave," he went on after Kane left, drawing deafening cheers. Jay ran through a couple of recent guest verses -- reveling in the double-time flow of G.O.O.D. Music's "Clique" and the luxurious style of Rick Ross' "3 Kings." "I got a million of these!" he crowed.

But the hour was growing late. Jay-Z sent us home with a heartfelt speech about the "genius-level talent" that he feels lies within everyone. "I ain't no different from anyone in this room, and now I'm standing on this stage, living proof," he said. And with that, it was finally time to say goodbye?-- if only so he could rest up for all the other shows he has coming up. "There's no [expletive] curfew," he said with a grin. "But I've really got to go."

River Spirit geared up to bag fourth straight success | bettor.com

River Spirit geared up to bag fourth straight success

Taking a look on River Spirit?s profile, it seems as if he has achieved more than his age. Four podium finishes in five-race career is an awesome streak that has made him such as strong runner as he can make a big impact in any big racing event.

The Glackin trained brindle dog has proved his class in A3 and A1 formats so far. Now, he is keen to win his maiden open race entitled as Billy Mulvaney Senior Memorial Open 750. This is going to be his second Shelbourne Park trip----the previous experience had been pleasant enough.

In tonight?s high-stakes open race, the two-year-old novice hound will break from the blue box to run over 750 yards with his eyes on the prize cheque worth ?500.

In his every start so far, River Spirit has done justice with the talent inherited from Westmead Hawk and River Melody.

The young and enthusiastic sprinter debuted on August 18, finishing 5th in his maiden race. He went on to get the runner-up spot in the next contest.

The brilliant sprinter stepped ahead to grab the 3?-length victory in his third A3 race. He impressed all the sport fans by winning a big race by the big margin of 6? lengths on September 8.

The dashing dog finally completed his hat-trick with the title of Find Us On Facebook A1 575. This excellent streak has tuned up his confidence and momentum well.

Now, River Spirit seems to be ready to make a big show, and tonight?s marathon is going to be an ideal chance for him to accomplish this end.

Despite all these factors, the skilled dog will have to be cautious of Momentinnewyork who elegantly earned an OR victory on June 24. That was The 2011 Gain Feeds Corn Cuchulainn 750 Round 1 Heat 4. The Olesen trained white and brindle bitch went on to win the The 2011 Gain Feeds Corn Cuchulainn 750 Semi-final by a neck?s margin.

Thus, the brilliant bitch will fight head-to-head with the dog. This will make the event interesting enough. Let us catch up the charged action.

Network Marketing Success ? Tips For Growing Your Business Quickly

Network marketing is not brain surgery; it just takes a little time to learn the basics. This article presents tips on how to get further in your network marketing campaign.

The financial experts agree that the calculation you should be using is your monthly spending times nine, the total being what you need to have on hand in case of emergency. Network marketing can give you that money and much more!

Make sure meetings are less than an hour. If you speak with a client for more than an hour, they may not want to work with you for fear that the business will take too much effort and time.

It is completely natural for people to like talking about themselves and what they want. Use this human trait to your advantage, and let people go on and on about themselves. While doing this, avoid saying too much about your own life. You want to come across as trustworthy, so let your customers feel like they are in control.

Making sure you put your customers first is a must in network marketing. Without it you?re nothing; the customers are what make you successful. Your business will tank if your customers aren?t happy. Set a goal to listen for at least 80% of the conversation and talk the other 20% of the time.

If you want to be professional as a business owner, take the time each day when you get out of bed to shower, fix your hair and apply makeup if you wear it. It is easy to work and act professionally if you are dressed for the part; this also allows you to quickly leave for a business meeting if needed.

When talking to a client about your network marketing project, make them believe that you are only there to help them. Tailor your presentation so that it?s only about them, making them money, making their life better, and alleviating their worries.

If you want to be successful at network marketing, consider participating in relevant online communities. These forums can provide valuable tips and information on network marketing, and as a bonus, they are free. Use an online search engine to discover forums about network marketing, and post in them every day to get as many tips as you can.

Continue using successful strategies and weed out the programs that aren?t working. Get advice from professional marketers. Try to establish the same business approach and mindset that led to their success. Copying them will assist you in finding your spot at the very top. Of course, you know to learn from your mistakes, but also try to emulate other people?s successes.

Outsourcing can be a great way to get all of your company?s network marketing done. Particularly if you do not have enough resources to invest in this form of advertising, an outsource company can be very beneficial. When you outsource the work, you have time for more pressing matters and get a fast turn around from the advertiser.

Do not take any shortcuts when using a network marketing approach, since this can hurt you in the long run. Even though you could be tempted to take shortcuts, the way to truly being successful with a network marketing campaign is to put in the proper time and effort into it. When you produce solid work, the payoff is inevitable.

Short term goals should be the building blocks to long-term success. You will probably have a long-range goal in mind for your business, perhaps three or five years out. However, with smaller goals as your focus immediately, you can build a foundation for these larger goals. This will assist you in tweaking your marketing methods so you can stay on track with your overall marketing plan.

One way to progress in your field is to learn as much as possible from your failures. Analyze what you did wrong and take measures not to repeat these mistakes. By looking at your failures, you are able to eliminate strategies that do not work and concentrate even harder on the things that do.

Invite your down line to engage in conversation and activity. Is it possible they?re shy? Could they be having an issue with the product or in their personal life? Create an open line of communication with your downline and make sure they know that they can ask you questions and interact with other network members. When everyone is participating, your team will work the best.

When you meet someone new, find out who is in their circle of friends and acquaintances. Ensure your audience will tell other people about your products, and make them eager to do so. The only time it is acceptable to spend your time discussing business with a person who has no desire to buy is if that person happens to have an impressive network of contacts.

The preceding tips should have given you the confidence you need to get out there and start prospecting. Always bear in mind that network marketing will never be fully learned overnight. It is a field where the more you know, the more successful you will be and that takes time.

Cannabis withdrawal symptoms might have clinical importance

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Cannabis users have a greater chance of relapse to cannabis use when they experience certain withdrawal symptoms, according to research published Sep. 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE led by David Allsop of the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) at the University of New South Wales.

The authors tested a group of dependent cannabis users over a two week period of abstinence for impairment related to their withdrawal symptoms. Findings were correlated with the probability of relapse to cannabis use during the abstinence period, and the level of use one month later.

They found that in more dependent users, certain withdrawal symptoms, such as physical tension, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, mood swings and loss of appetite, were more strongly associated with relapse than other symptoms, such as hot flashes, fatigue, or night sweats. Participants with greater dependence before the abstinence attempt reported more severe impairment from the withdrawal. Participants with greater impairment from cannabis withdrawal consumed more cannabis during the month following the abstinence attempt.

If these results extend to treatment seeking cannabis users seeking treatment for withdrawal, the research may help improve counseling and treatment strategies for those looking for support.

"Tailoring treatments to target withdrawal symptoms contributing to functional impairment during a quit attempt may improve treatment outcomes" says Allsop.

Report: The Internet Is a Language Killer

A new study conducted by a European nonprofit called META-NET suggests that a number of European languages could eventually vanish from the Internet. Languages such as Icelandic, Latvian and Lithuanian don't have enough speakers to gain traction as popular languages on the Web. The report goes so far as to say that German, Italian, Spanish and French could be at risk, too.

Stunning Nebula Photo Shows Head of 'Cosmic Seagull'

A huge cloud of gas that looks like the head of a seagull shines brightly in a gorgeous new picture snapped by a telescope in Chile.

The photo, taken by a telescope at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory, shows the head portion of the Seagull Nebula. The cloud of gas spotlighted in the image glows intensely due to radiation blasted out by a hot young star at its heart, scientists said.

Like other nebulas, the Seagull is a stellar nursery ? an enormous cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases where stars are being born. Nebulas come in a variety of sizes and shapes, some of which spur astronomers' imaginations and evoke comparisons to animals or familiar objects.

The Seagull Nebula is so named because it resembles a gull in flight. The nebula, which is formally known as IC 2177, spans about 100 light-years from wingtip to wingtip. It's found about 3,700 light-years from Earth, on the border between the constellations Monoceros (The Unicorn) and Canis Major (The Great Dog).

The nebula appears to be close to Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. But IC 2177 actually lies more than 400 times farther away from us than Sirius, researchers said.

The bright star lighting up the Seagull's head is known as HD 53367. This star, which is visible in the center of the image and could be taken to be the bird's eye, is about 20 times more massive than our own sun, researchers said.

Radiation streaming from the nebula's young stars causes surrounding hydrogen gas to glow a rich red color. Light from these hot bluish-white stars also scatters off tiny dust particles, creating the blue haze seen in parts of the picture.

Parts of the Seagull Nebula complex were first observed in 1785 by the famed German-British astronomer Sir William Herschel, but the region imaged in the new picture weren't photographed until a century later, researchers said.

Running A Small Business Server With ClearOS 6.3.0 (Community ...

Version 1.0

Last edited 09/24/2012

This guide shows how you can install and run a Small Business Server with ClearOS 6.3.0 (Community Edition). With ClearOS, you can run various services (such as a file- and print server, a web proxy and content filter, a mail server, etc.) in your local network and manage them through an easy web interface. ClearOS provides apps for each of these tasks from its marketplace - many of them are free, some of them have to be paid for. ClearOS Community is open-source and free. There's also a professional version available for which you have to pay, but which in return provides better support, better tested apps and updates, etc.

I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!

?

1 Preliminary Note

In this tutorial I use the hostname server1.example.com with the IP address 192.168.0.100. These settings might differ for you, so you have to replace them where appropriate.

ClearOS is based on RHEL/CentOS, so you might be familiar with its installer already.

?

2 Installing ClearOS 6.3.0

Download the ClearOS 6.3 Community ISO image from http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/downloads.html, burn it onto a CD, and boot from it. Select Install or upgrade an existing system:

The welcome screen of the ClearOS installer appears. Click on Next:

Choose your language next:

Select your keyboard layout:

I assume that you use a locally attached hard drive, so you should select Basic Storage Devices here:

You might see the following warning - The storage device may contain data. If you see this click on the Yes, discard any data button to proceed:

Fill in the hostname of the server (e.g. server1.example.com), then click on the Configure Network button:

Go to the Wired tab, select the network interface (probably eth0) and click on Edit...:

Mark the Connect automatically checkbox and go to the IPv4 Settings tab and select Manual in the Method drop-down menu. Fill in one, two, or three nameservers (separated by comma) in the DNS servers field (e.g. 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4), then click on the Add button next to the Addresses area. Now give your network card a static IP address and netmask (in this tutorial I'm using the IP address 192.168.0.100 and netmask 255.255.255.0 or 24 for demonstration purposes; if you are not sure about the right values, http://www.subnetmask.info might help you). Also fill in your gateway (e.g. 192.168.0.1) and click on the Apply... button:

The network configuration is now finished. Click on the Next button:

Choose your time zone:

Give root a password:

Next we do the partitioning. Select Replace Existing Linux System(s). This will give you a small /boot partition and a large / partition which is fine for our purposes:

Select Write changes to disk:

The hard drive is being formatted, and the installation begins. This will take a few minutes:

Finally, the installation is complete, and you can remove your CD from the computer and reboot it:

After the first reboot...

... you will see the following screen which tells you to use a browser to configure ClearOS and which URL to use to connect to the ClearOS web interface (https://192.168.0.100:81 in this case):

NY a busy battleground of competitive House races

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? New York state's congressional elections are testing the staying power of Republicans who rode a tea party wave to a House majority two years ago ? as well as the resilience of Democrats striving to regain control.

Democrats are targeting four of the five Republicans who took New York congressional seats away from them in 2010. Two more of the most contested House races in New York are in heavily Republican districts where Democrats won special elections.

Included in the mix are three rematches of contests decided by paper-thin margins last election, making New York a busy House battleground for both parties.

The big money involved in the contests reveals the GOP's intent on preserving its foothold in the heavily Democratic state. The National Republican Congressional Committee said it had reserved $5.25 million for TV time in New York, more than half to defend three freshmen. The rest is going to three districts held by Democrats, including the Buffalo area seat won by Kathy Hochul in a special election upset last year.

Democratic spending indicates President Barack Obama's party is equally committed to gaining influence as part of the party's drive to add 25 seats and reclaim the House majority. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said it has spent or reserved $1.02 million for TV time in two New York races.

Hochul made national headlines by pioneering the strategy of casting the race as a referendum on the GOP plan to transform Medicare, authored by Rep. Paul Ryan, now the party's vice presidential candidate.

It's not clear whether that strategy will work against Hochul's new Republican challenger, Chris Collins. In a recent interview, the former Erie County executive refused to give an opinion on the plan.

"I'm someone who looks forward and not backward," Collins said. "And the Ryan budget is in the past."

That may be wishful thinking, but there's no doubt that New York ? like California and Illinois ? is critical to the battle for control of the House. While Democratic leaders express optimism about their chances, analysts generally forecast Republicans holding onto a slimmer majority.

New York lost two of its 29 seats in the House to redistricting for the 2010 Census population changes. Despite the GOP election gains in 2010, Democrats still overwhelmingly dominate ? 21-8 ? the state's House delegation.

The battle in Hochul's district, which stretches between the Buffalo and Rochester suburbs, is one of the nation's most closely watched House races. A Siena College poll last month showed a statistical dead heat.

Collins has spent most of his adult life as a businessman. He ran the county with a sharp eye on the bottom line, alienating some lawmakers, and has promoted a waste-cutting managerial philosophy during public appearances.

Hochul also is well-known locally as the former Erie County clerk. While Republicans have a 40 percent to 32 percent enrollment edge in the district, Hochul has shown she can pull support from across the aisle.

"Being a Democrat in the most Republican district in the state, I actually can just ignore party labels and be laser focused on what's best for the district," Hochul said.

A bit east, near Syracuse, Democrats hope Dan Maffei can win back the seat he lost to Republican Ann Marie Buerkle by just 648 votes in 2010. Buerkle, the only New York representative to score a perfect 100 on last year's American Conservative Union legislator rankings, is running in a newly drawn district with nearly even numbers of Republicans and Democrats.

The DCCC said it has spent or reserved $361,616 in TV ad time for the race, a fraction of the $1.19 million reserved by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

It's one of two New York seats both committees are pumping money into for TV. In eastern New York, the NRCC has reserved $1.32 million for freshman Rep. Chris Gibson, who is being challenged by Democrat Julian Schreibman. The DCCC has spent or reserved $681,481 for TV ads there.

"The tea party wave of 2010 has receded and left New York's House Republicans high and dry with no cover to hide their toxic voting records and no way to defend their votes to end Medicare to pay for tax breaks for millionaires," said Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., chairman of the DCCC.

Nathaniel Sillin, a spokesman for the NRCC, characterized Israel's claims as "ridiculous" and noted the GOP is aggressively pursuing opportunities in the state.

"Republicans continue to be on offense in New York because Democrats are running on more of the same failed tax-and-spend economic policies that have stifled economic recovery," Sillin said.

Two other races provide second chances to Republican challengers who just fell short in 2010.

In northern New York, Democratic Rep. Bill Owens is defending his seat again against Republican businessman Matt Doheny, who narrowly lost in 2010 when a third Conservative Party candidate took thousands of votes. This time, Doheny has both the Conservative and Republican lines on the ballot. In New York, a candidate can accept the nomination of more than one party and reap all votes combined.

On eastern Long Island, Republican businessman Randy Altschuler is trying unseat five-term incumbent Democratic Rep. Timothy Bishop. Altschuler came within 593 votes of defeating Bishop two years ago and this time, he has the third-party Independence Party line, which was worth 7,370 votes for Bishop when he had the line in 2010.

"Super" PACs on both sides are spending money on the race, including the Karl Rove-backed Crossroads GPS, which started an ad critical of Bishop on cable TV last week. The ad focuses on Bishop's role helping get a fireworks permit for a Hamptons bar mitzvah at the request of a businessman who was later solicited by the campaign and donated $5,000. Bishop has said he did nothing wrong in helping a constituent.

The NRCC is spending TV money on both rematches.

In Staten Island, Republican freshman and former FBI agent Michael Grimm is dealing with a potentially much larger issue as he faces a challenge from Democrat Mark Murphy.

The FBI is probing money donated to Grimm's 2010 campaign by followers of an Israeli rabbi. Agents last month arrested an Israeli businessman with links to the adult entertainment industry who had helped Grimm raise hundreds of thousands of dollars from the rabbi's followers in New York.

Some donors have said they broke campaign finance law by donating more money than allowed, or by funneling donations from foreigners who aren't legally allowed to give to U.S. candidates.

Grimm repeatedly has denied knowledge of any improper donations or any other illegal activity.
